Anantnag, May 26: A BJP leader in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district was held on the charges of “cheating” after he allegedly took Rs 1.1 lakh from families of two persons, who were arrested for questioning in a militancy related case.
The BJP leader had ostensibly promised the families of the duo that he would get them released.
Anantnag Police in a statement said that they had detained two suspects from Kokernag area of district to question them regarding a terror crime.
“Two suspects (names withheld) from Kokernag were called for questioning regarding a terror crime. While they were being questioned to establish their involvement or otherwise, their families approached one person Nisar Ahamd Khan of Kadipora,Anantnag to secure their release. In the meanwhile the two individuals were not found involved or having any knowledge of circumstances that resulted in the commision of the crime. Accordingly they were released. Subsequently it was known that they had paid money to Nisar Ahmad Khan,” reads the police statement.
According to reports, Nisar Ahmed Khan of Kadipora, Anantnag is a senior BJP leader and holds the post of district general secretary. He was recently elected as sarpanch of Gopalpora village.
BJP leader Nisar Ahmad Khan according to police had taken Rs one lakh and ten thousand from the families promising the release of their kin.
“He had approached police and also sought appointment with a police officer for the same. He was however not allowed to meet the officer and instead conveyed on phone that they will be sent home if not found involved,” police said
Police said that FIR No 238/2021 under section 420 IPC was registered in Police Station Anantnag against the accused and money paid to him has been recovered.
Police said that the money recovered from the accused will be handed over to families after due process. He has been arrested in the instant case. Further investigation is going on.
Police advised people to refrain from paying money to touts and unscrupulous elements and instead meet senior police officers in their respective areas for redressal of any grievances.
BJP Spokesperson, Altaf Thakur confirmed to Early Times that the detained leader was affiliated with BJP and holds the post in district committee.
“Yes, Nisar Ahmad Khan belongs to our party. Law is the same for everyone and so law must take its own course,” he said.
