Amid Covid crisis, crime on rise in Kashmir

Srinagar, May 26: Even as the police are mainly busy with enforcement of lockdown in the wake of alarming Covid-19 cases in Jammu and Kashmir, the crime rate has been rising in the valley making the job of the cops even challenging.
In the last few days, when Kashmir continues to be under lockdown and people are gasping for oxygen, from rape to abduction and blackmarketing several such cases have been reported.
On May 19, the Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a major manhunt to nab a man, who has kidnapped a girl in Sopore area of north Kashmir.
“Sopore Police seeks help of general public to trace out the Kidnapper namely Mehraj ud Din Ganie S/O Ghulam Muhammad Ganie R/O Pujipora Wagub, If anybody have any information/clue may kindly inform Sopore Police on 9596773004, 9596773011, 9596773019 and 9596773024,” said a public notification from the police.
In another case, a girl was raped in south Kashmir. But the active cops nabbed the accused within one hour on same May 19.
“District Police Kulgam arrested an accused, allegedly involved in Raping a Minor Girl, within 01 hour after complaint was received. in PS Devsar. In this regard case FIR No. 28/2021 U/S 341,376,506 IPC,4 POCSO Act stands registered and investigation is in progress,” said a police official. He said a minor had been raped in the said case.
In another case on May 17, the police busted a blackmarketing case.
“Budgam Police foiled black marketing of Government rice by seizing 05 quintals of illegally procured government rice from a shopkeeper. Case registered. Accused arrested,” said a police spokesman.
Talking to Early Times a senior police official said it was unfortunate that even in these testing times, the people of Kashmir were not mending their ways.
“When the world is praying for well being of humanity, shocking crimes like rape of a minor are taking place in Kashmir and this is something really worrisome,” said the official on the condition of anonymity.
