Early Times Report

Jammu, May 27: 86th Mahanirvan divas was observed by Shri Guru Ravi Dass Sabha Bahu Fort, Jammu today in the premises of Gurudwara Shri Guru Ravi Dass Ji Maharaj Bahu Fort, Jammu.
Floral tributes were paid to Param Pujya Mata Rama Bai Ambedkar. While speaking on this occasion Sham Lal Basson, general secretary Guru Ravi Dass Sabha Bahu Fort, Jammu said that Dr B R Ambedkar affectionately addressed his better half Ramabai as Ramu while she called him Saheb.
They married in 1908 when Baba Saheb was 17 and Ramabai was 9. While Ramabai was struggling to arrange two square meals for a day for the family in India, Dr Ambedkar was no better off in far away in London.
Dr Ambedkar describes that Ramabai shouldered the responsibility of running the household for a long time in his life when he was abroad. Even after he returned he became so immersed in social work that he scarcely found half an hour a day for Ramabai. Even then Ramabai had to manage the family all alone.
Ramabai and Ambedkar were dealt one cruel after another when they lost their three sons and a daughter. After Baba saheb's return to India, the economic condition of family improved but Ramabai's health started deteriorating. Dr B R Ambedkar had not found to look after his family for almost 10 years.
Then Baba Saheb tried his best but there was no improvement in her health. She became exceedingly weak and was confined to bed for six months before her death. On 27th May 1935, Baba saheb's Ramu bid farewell.
Prof Chaman Lal Shivgotra also threw light on the life and mission of Param Pujya Mata Ramabai Ambedkar and paid tributes. Those who paid tributes included Parshotam Kumar, Joginder Kumar, Surinder Kumar and Sham Lal Kalsi.
