Early Times Report

Jammu, June 8: The administration of Government Medical College Hospital Jammu has been unable to develop infrastructure despite liberal funding by the government.
Sources told Early Times that the government had sanctioned Rs 17 crore for the renovation of different blocks within the GMC Jammu. “The first installment of Rs 5crore was also released. The GMC had to renovate the administration block, enhance the bed capacity in the wards and get other works done to ensure that patients don’t suffer but till date nothing much has been done as a result second and third installments haven’t have been released,” they added.
Sources said that in addition to Rs 17 crore, the government had sanctioned Rs 16 crore to renovate Chopra Nursing Home.
“As first installment Rs 5 crore were released to take up the works within the nursing home. Had this facility been renovated it would have helped in accommodating the patient rush during the pandemic,” sources added.
They said that the funds were sanctioned nearly 2-years ago but the “laidback approach” of the helmsmen at GMC Hospital Jammu has led to everything remaining in limbo.
An insider said that the renovation works not being carried on time have left the administrators “red faced” as they are unable to explain why the work got delayed despite funds being available. “People managing the GMC should explain what has led to the delay.
And why they couldn’t expedite the work when the first wave of COVID-19 had subsided last year.”
Another source said, “The government has taken a serious note of the GMC officials failing to deliver and the matter is being looked into. When the COVID-19 second wave was its peak the questions about why the renovation and capacity building works at GMC Jammu were delayed need answers.
A GMC official said that the renovation work is on and it would be expedited in coming days.
