Director Agriculture stresses on promotion of urban roof top cultivation

JAMMU, Aug 28: Director Agriculture Production & Farmers' Welfare, Jammu, KK Sharma today inaugurated distribution of vegetable seedlings raised under Naturally Ventilated Poly Green House (NVPGH) at Krishi Bhawan, Talab Tillo, Jammu.
The seedlings of different vegetable crops and varieties are being raised here and distributed among the vegetable growers of Jammu on no profit and no loss basis.
Director Agriculture stressed on promotion of urban roof top cultivation on large scale using grow bags, crates, trays and pots as urban dwellers are adopting kitchen gardening with keen interest. He also advocated the promotion of local varieties of vegetables as these are pretty popular among the consumers.
Director Agriculture handed over the vegetable seedlings to farmers of Marh and Misriwala namely Rattan Chand and Darshan Lal on the occasion.
Interacting with the farmers, Director Agriculture informed that about 2 lakh seedlings of Cauliflower, Cabbage, Knol-Khol, Brocolli, Lettuce, Red Cabbage and Hag Saag have been raised for distribution among the farmers. Further it was appraised that 600 grow bags of vegetables, medicinal and aromatic plants have been distributed by Vegetable Improvement scheme (VIS) on subsidized rates.
It was given out that presently grow bags of Spinach, Coriander, Hak Saag, Methi, and Mint are ready for sale. Medicinal plants involving Ashwagandha, Giloy, Bail, Brahmi, Shataver, Naiz Boz are also available for sale.
Later Director also inspected the vegetable demo unit where Sweet Corn, Yard Long Beans, Bitter Guard and Brinjal has been raised trial basis.
Those Present on the occasion include Joint Director (Marketing), AS Reen, Joint Director ( Farms), Rajinder Sharma, Joint Director (Apiculture & Mushroom), Iqbal Singh, Agronomist Vegetables, JC Raina, CAO Udhampur, Subash Sharma, Assistant Agrostologist, Rajesh Gupta, FDA, Rohit Singh Balloria, Farm manager JPAEF, Arun Jaral, and RA, Manmohan Singh besides other officers and staff members.
