Kashmir artisans get golden hand awards, Jammu to wait!

Jammu, Aug 28: In a recent development, the Jammu and Kashmir government has given away “Golden Hand Awards” to as many as fifty artisans in Kashmir while such a development is awaited for the golden hands hailing from the winter capital region.
On August 27, the government held the award ceremony in Srinagar to honor the artisans from the valley.
Official documents reveal that “With today’s award distribution ceremony titled ‘Tribute to Golden Hands’, for the year 2018, a total of Rs. 17,20,000/- stands disbursed among 50 artisans (including 8 female artisans) along with mementos and certificates of appreciation who have done exceptionally well in their respective crafts for the year 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. The awards were given in the categories that included Sozni, Carpet, Papier Machie, Crewel, Chain Stitch.”
Officials said the Directorate of Handicrafts & Handloom Kashmir has been spending considerable amount to honor the artisans in Kashmir. Giving details about the awards, officials said that for the year 2015 a total of 12 awards and an amount of Rs 3,50,000/-, for year 2016 a total 14 awards and an award money of Rs 5,00,000/-, for the years 2017 a total 13 awards and an amount of Rs 500000/- and for the year 2018 a total of 11 awards and an amount of Rs 3,70,000/- have been distributed among the deserving artisans.
Experts said there was a need to encourage the artisans of Jammu on similar lines.
“Even though the artisans of Jammu region are also occasionally honored by the government but the encouragement for the artisans and the promotion of their art is more for Kashmir and that is an open secret... This mindset needs to change,” said a senior official in the Civil Secretariat on the condition of anonymity.
When contacted the organizers of the event said the government event was held to honor the artisans of Kashmir province and that Jammu would hold a similar event soon as the same had “got delayed in the wake of Covid19.”
