Early Times Report
UDHAMPUR, Aug 28: Government Degree College (GDC) Chenani as part of the celebrations of AZADI KA AMRIT MAHOTSAV under the auspices of its NSS Unit 'PRAYATNA' and Eco Club 'PARYAVARAN' launched an Online Public Awareness Campaign on "Safe Disposal of Masks, Gloves, PPE Kits and other Covid-19 Waste" today. The programme was initiated as part of JAN BHAGIDARI with JAN ANDOLAN in which the students and NSS Volunteers of the College shared their awareness messages on different Social Media Platforms. Dr Pragya Khanna, Principal of the College said that according to the experts, there is no doubt that the rules and SoPs for Covid-19 are in place to protect us from the virus, but that protection comes at a great price. The surge in usage of masks, gloves, PPE kits contributes to a drastic increase in single-use plastic waste. She further said that there is yet another aspect to it that different germs can survive on a used mask for different durations. Experts feel that viruses, when left exposed, can survive between a few hours and a few days. The NSS Volunteers of GDC, Chenani request all to not throw the used mask indiscriminately in lifts, parks, workplaces, homes, open dustbins as it can pose a potential health hazard to people who come in contact with such masks. Another significant aspect of the event is the elastic cut campaign that aims to save the wildlife. The Elastic Cut Campaign involves one simple step of snipping the elastic before disposing off the masks. The programme was monitored by Prof. Sunil Kumar, NSS Program Officer.
