DSS hails inclusion of MMHC in tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage

JAMMU, Aug 29: The Dogra Sadar Sabha (DSS) has thanked the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for intervening in the matter of conservation of the protected Mubarak Mandi Heritage Complex (MMHC) and also for the decision to include it in the ‘Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites’ as disclosed in a section of the press.
This was stated in a press statement issued by Gulchain Singh Charak, Former Minister, Founding Vice Chairman of the Mubarak Mandi Heritage Society and President, Dogra Sadar Sabha, J&K, after a meeting of the Core Group of DSS held here today.
Charak said that it was also resolved in the meeting to request the Lieutenant Governor that the work on the remaining components of the comprehensive conservation and reuse plan may kindly be got expedited so that the complex is operationalised as a self sustaining Cultural Heritage Centre, as already approved by the Governing Body of the Society in March 2019, in time for the celebrations be held in connection with the 75 years of India’s Independence in 2022.
He said that it was also resolved that as requested on earlier occasions as well, reconstitution of the Governing Body of the Mubarak Mandi Jammu Heritage Society under the chairmanship of the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor may kindly be considered at the earliest having both official and private members as per the Rules and Regulations of the Society. This would avoid situations where one arm of the Government does not know what the other arm is doing, and will enable quick and transparent decision making to avoid repetition of any unnecessary deviations and derailment of the work of the Society at different levels. The request for an appointment with the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor by a delegation of some prominent citizens was also reiterated.
Charak also disclosed that the lathi charge on students at Ramban was also strongly condemned in the meeting and it was demanded that an inquiry may be held in the matter and those responsible for highhandedness may be pulled up.
Prominent among those who were present in the meeting were Col Karan Singh, Prem Sagar Gupta, Brig MS Jamwal, Samar Dev Singh Charak, Gambhir Dev Singh Charak, Amanat Ali Shah, Balwinder Singh Bhatia and Chhankar Singh.
