DDC chairman kick-starts plantation drive

BASOHLI, Aug 29: District Development Council (DDC) Chairman, Kathua Col Mahan Singh (Retd.) kick started the Plantation drive conducted by Forest Division Basohli in Chanchlo Mata hills here today.
DFO Basohli Ravinder Singh, ADC Basohli Tilak Raj Thappa, ADC Billawar Sandesh Sharma, Shiv Padha, besides prominent local citizens and a large number of employees of the Forest Department were present on the occasion.
Today’s drive witnessed a massive plantation of more that 300 bamboo plants that were planted around the Chanchlo Fort as a measure to protect the structure from sliding. The saplings were planted in the area scattered around the steep slopes around the significant historical monument on this famous hill.
Speaking on the occasion DDC Chairman dwelt in detail on the significance of trees in maintaining a sustainable environment that is the only way to save the mother earth.
Meanwhile, Col Mahan Singh also asked the Forest Department officials under DFO Basohli to soon undertake crate-work to augment the measures to protect the historic monument on the outskirts of Basohli from where visitors can have a panoramic view of Ranjit Sagar Dam and Basohli Town.
He said the area has a huge tourist potential and measures shall soon be taken to bring it on the Tourist Map of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
