9/6/2021 12:21:26 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

BANI, Sep 5: Advocate Rakesh Thakur has appealed to the Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory Administration to name the Government High School (GHS) Duggan, Bani in district Kathua after Vir Singh, who was awarded Military Medal by Maharaja Bahadhur in World War 2nd for his exceptional gallantry.
In this regard, Advocate Rakesh Thakur presented a memorandum to DDC Vice-Chairman Raghunandan Singh Jasrotia (Bablu) here today for naming the GHS Duggan as a tribute to the great soldier of this area besides peace to the departed soul of a brave soldier who made the Indian Nation proud with his excellent gallantry skills. In the submitted memorandum Advocate Thakur stated Vir Singh was also awarded with a number of other gallantry awards and that he is popularly known by the name Victoria Cross Veer Singh.
Elaborating further on the background of Veer Singh, Advocate Rakesh Thakur has submitted in the memorandum that the brave soldier Veer Singh was born in village Duggan of Tehsil Bani in Kathua District and displayed exemplary bravery in the 2nd World War killing innumerable enemy soldiers for which Queen Victoria awarded him with gallantry award.
Advocate Thakur lamented that Vir Singh’s name does not find a place in the books of history till date. He regretted that the condition of this great soldier continues to live in a pitiable condition with its family members going to Delhi for petty jobs in factories to make their livelihood.
