Alleged irregularities in party elections : NC workers fight it out

Early Times Report

Shopain, Sept 20: The National Conference workers on Monday were seen fighting with each other in South Kashmir’s Shopain district during the party’s block level elections.
The faction led by NC Leader Shabir Ahmad Kullay alleged massive irregularities in elections which were held to elect Block Presidents and District President for Shopian District.
“The party guideline says that 200 members of ST/SC community will elect one delegate while as for NON-ST/SC 300 members get one delegate but this norm was violated in Shopain district,” they alleged.
They also claimed that as this formula Wachi Constituency of Shopian district should have only 22 delegates as the party has only 6000 members from the assembly segment but the list submitted to election observers mentioned 36 delegates.
NC leader Shabir Ahmad Kullay told Early Times that elections weren’t conducted as per the norms and party’s constitution. “Elections were to be held for electing block presidents but surprisingly the elections were conducted for electing district president without issuing notification,” he alleged.
“We were preparing for block elections when we heard that someone got elected as District President,” he said, adding no one in the party was interested in transparency.
He said that questions raised over the number of delegates and valid votes weren’t addressed and elections were conducted to please one section.
Former MLC Ali Mohammad Dar, who supervised these elections as Election Observer, rebutted the allegations and claimed that the elections were held in a ‘free and fair atmosphere’, however admitted that the workers clashed and raised issues.
“Among the issues they raised was the number of delegates from the Wachi Assembly segment. I told them that we will reject and keep only 22 delegates but they (while referring to faction led Shabir Ahmad Kullay) didn’t contest,” he said.
Dar said that the block elections were postponed due to the demise of Hurriyat Leader Syed Alki Shah Geelani and the date for holding block and district level elections was decided and conveyed to one and all.
National Conference later in the evening announced that former MLC Shokwet Ahmad Ganie was elected District President for Shopian.
