Early Times Report

Banihal, Sept 20: The commuters especially tourists and trucks are up in arms against the authorities for not checking the frequent traffic jams at Qazigund Toll Plaza.
They say that Qazigund-Banihal stretch is witnessing frequent traffic jams as private construction companies failed to timely complete the reconstruction of part of damaged flyover in Banihal.
“Last month on 23rd, one portion of the newly constructed flyover developed cracks following which one lane of this flyover was completely closed for the movement of traffic,” officials said.
A group of drivers told the Early Times that diversion of traffic through a single lane was causing huge inconvenience and frequent traffic jams on both sides of the tunnel, especially in Kashmir.
“Due to these traffic jams at Qazigund Toll Plaza we remain stuck for hours and lose precious journey times,” drivers said.
They said that because of the frequent traffic jams on Highway at Qazigund most of the truckers were opting to travel through Mughal road.
“Now most of the truck drivers now prefer to travel through Mugal road because of these frequent traffic jams,” they said, adding the government should have come up with a plan to ensure smooth movement of truckers ferrying fruit to outside Mandis.
At Toll Plaza Qazigund, a group of tourists, who remained stuck in a traffic jam for a few hours, also expressed anguish against the authorities.
On being asked why they failed to timely complete the reconstruction of the damaged portion of the flyover, Navyug construction company officials said that they have completed the work and after a week it will be thrown open for traffic.
“It was a minor crack but we put in extra efforts to clear all our doubts. Now we have completed the concreting. After a few days it will be thrown open for traffic,” Project Manager Muneeb Ahmad Tak said.
Arun, who heads NHAI IN Jammu & Kashmir, said that all necessary processes were conducted before throwing the tunnel and flyover open for traffic.
