'Sulking' govt employees mull agitation
9/30/2021 12:18:31 AM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 29: Within days after daily wagers and casual workers organized a massive protest in support of their demands, employees organizations are mulling over starting an agitation to get all issues addressed.
Daily wagers and casual workers are mounting pressure on the regular employees to come in support of their demand because those at the helm of the affairs are not taking 'genuine' issues of daily wagers seriously.
Highly placed sources said that representatives of daily wagers and casual workers held series of meeting with trade union leaders and sought their support to get their issues resolved. "Not only daily wagers and casual workers, but there are also several issues of related to the regular employees which are pending", a trade union leader told The Early Times.
Wishing anonymity, he said this time a decisive and joint struggle of daily wagers and regular employees will be started to force the government to accept all just and genuine demands of the employees.
On September 25, daily wager and casual workers held a strong protest demonstration in support of their demands. Under the banner of Jammu Kashmir Casual Labours United Front (Jammu province) assembled near the office of Divisional Commissioner Jammu employees staged a strong protest.
Several Trade Union leaders addressed the gathering and criticized the administration for not taking any initiative to start the process of regularization of the casual labours and other daily wagers.
There are about 61,000 such daily wagers and many of them are working for the last over 15-20 years in various departments. The majority of them have remained on the forefront during COVID but, unfortunately, they are struggling for their survival and no benefit was accorded to them. They pointed out that several workers died during service but their families were not compensated and no benefits were provided to them. There is no social security for these workers. They demanded regularisation of all the casual labours and daily rated workers, release of their pending wages, social security cover, and implementation of the Minimum Wages Act. They pointed out that the workers are struggling for a long but the administration has not provided any relief to them.
