Jammu traders seek end to ‘Babu Raaj,’ demand popular Govt

Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 1: Businessmen in Jammu are apparently fed up with the present system in the newly carved out Union Territory in Jammu and Kashmir. They are demanding that an elected government needs to replace the ‘Babu Raaj.’
Early Times spoke to some businessmen in Jammu city on Friday. Most of them were of the opinion that the administration led by Lieutenant Governor seems unaware of the “ground situation.”
A businessman said, “During the past two years many stringent rules have become applicable in Jammu and Kashmir. Rules are at par with the developed countries but the facilities being provided to common people are zero. If the Lieutenant Governor really wants to remain abreast with the developments then he should start holding public darbars and listen to the grievances of the people directly. Help lines are similar to what they used to be decades ago. “
Another trader said, “Bureaucrats are inaccessible. They are not ready to meet the people. Files remain pending for months. It seems that the Lieutenant Governor is being misled by the officials around him. Jammu is facing huge problems and no one seems interested in addressing these. It’s unfortunate that helmsmen are busy meeting the film stars and can’t spare any time for a common man. We need elected representatives who can listen to us.”
One more businessman said, “People have become jobless. Everyone is protesting. Visit 100 people you will find 98 fed up with life as the avenues and resources have shrunk for them. Former MLAs are doing the work of their own people only and are least bothered about what a common man is facing. There is nothing for the people of Jammu. Everyday new guidelines are issued, like malls are being opened. There is no harm in new ventures coming up but first they should see whether the people are progressing or are on the path of decline. We sometimes hear Dr Farooq Abdullah has been put behind bars and Mehbooba (Mufti) has been arrested. Is this democracy? If someone is doing wrong, punish him but at least try to know what a common man is facing.”
