GDC Kilam organises series of events to celebrate Gandhi Jayanti

KULGAM, Oct 16: Celebrating Gandhi Jayanti, Department of Education and NSS Unit of Govt Degree College Kilam organised a series of activities on different aspects of Gandhian Philosophy.
The events were held under the supervision of Principal, Prof. Dilruba Rasool Hamdani. The celebrations began with the intra-college painting competition on the theme “Swach Bharat Abhiyan”. The students showed their creativity by making beautiful posters depicting “Swach Bharat Abhiyan”. The competition was adjudged by Ms. Mehraba Akhbar (Assistant Professor, Sociology), Dr. Shoukat Ahmad Pala (Assistant Professor, Botany) and Dr. Aijaz Ahmad Mir (Assistant Professor, Mathematics). The 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions were secured by Zeenat Mushtaq from (B. G. 4th Semester), Humaira Mushtaq from (B. G. 4th Semester) and Humaria Iqbal from (B. G. 1st Semester) respectively.
A cleanliness drive was held in the college campus in which NSS volunteers, students and some staff members participated. The participants cleaned the whole college campus. On this occasion Principal, Prof. Dilruba Rasool Hamdani said, cleanliness is next to Godliness, it casts a positive influence on the wellbeing of individuals.
Inter-college online quiz competition on the theme “Gandhiji’s Role in Freedom Struggle” was also held in which 2148 students from different colleges of UT J & K participated in the competition. Mujtaba Ahmad Sheikh from GDC Shopian, Abdul Khaliq from GDC Surankote and Abreena Rashid from Govt. College for Women Anantnag secured 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.
Essay competition on the theme “Relevance of Gandhian Principles in Contemporary World” was held on 6th October, 2021 in which 26 students participated. In almost all the essays stress was laid on the Gandhian principles like Non-violence, Truth, Satyagraha and Love which are significantly relevant in today’s world. The essays were evaluated by a team of experts who declared Shobby Jan from B. G. 6th, Seerat Yaqoob from B. G. 4th Semester and Saima Hameed from B. G. 6th Semester as 1st, 2nd and 3rd position holders respectively.
The celebrations were concluded with the Swachta Awareness Rally held in Kilam village on 8th October, 2021. NSS volunteers, students and staff members participated in the awareness rally. The main purpose of organizing the Swachta rally was to create awareness among the local people regarding hygiene and sanitation. The rally started from college gate and passed through the main road and streets of Kilam village. The participants provided awareness to shopkeepers, street vendors and house holders of Kilam village regarding Swachta Hi Sewa Hai. While distributing the prizes and certificates among the position holders of different activities Principal, Prof. Dilruba Rasool Hamdani highlighted the importance of all the activities conducted during the week. She encouraged the coordinator of the programme (Mr. Irshad Ahmad Kumar, Assistant Professor, and Education) and organizing secretary Mr. Niyaz Ahmad Khan, NSS Programme Officer for organizing these events successfully.
