Hilal Rather joins PC, son of another top NC leader to follow suit
Early Times’ report vindicated

Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 16: Hilal Rather’s joining of the Peoples’ Conference has authenticated Early Times report that sons two stalwarts of the party will join Sajad Gani Lone’s party.
The Early Times in its October 6 edition had reported that sons of two Kashmir based stalwarts of NC were ready to quit the party.
It was reported that the sons of two Kashmir-based veteran leaders of the National Conference were seriously thinking to desert the party after being sidelined by the leadership.
The young leaders are facing ‘humiliation in the party so they are seriously looking for other options. It was reported that either they will join the Peoples’ Conference or Apni Party.
Sources said that after Hilal Rather joining the Peoples Conference, son of another politician is likely to follow suit as he is in touch with both Apni Party and the Peoples’ Conference.
The second young leader, who is seriously thinking to leave NC, is very active in the party for quite some time but now he is feeling sidelined.
“I have decided to join Peoples’ Conference on my own. I am here to do positive politics”, Hilal said and added that he has not consulted his father before joining the Peoples’ Conference and it is his own independent decision. “I respect my father but I have to make my own decisions regarding my future in politics”, he said.
“Hilal Rather is a humble soul and very down to earth person. His father Abdul Rahim Rather was one of the most competent ministers in the former NC led regimes. He has had very clean and honest track record,” said a politician.
Earlier on October 2, veteran leader of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Legislator, Nizamuddin Bhat had joined the People’s Conference. For the last some days there were rumours in the political circles regarding Abdul Rahim Rather would join the Peoples’ Conference by saying ‘goodbye’ to the National Conference. Although Rather denied leaving the party on Thursday only, his son joined the Peoples’ Conference today.
“These reports are baseless and wrong. I am not joining Peoples Conference or any other party,”, Rather had clarified.
Rather, who has represented Charar-e-Sharief constituency for a record 36 years in the erstwhile state assembly, has been inactive in politics for the last couple of years.
He had won six consecutive assembly elections from Charar-e-Sharief constituency in the central Kashmir Budgam district. A law graduate Rather was a practicing lawyer from 1971 to 1982 and held important portfolios in the National Conference governments including the post of Speaker.
He also served as Finance Minister several times besides holding Agriculture, Rural Development, Law, and Parliamentary Affairs portfolios.
