Colourless Diwali
10/31/2021 10:53:01 PM

It’s after two years that Diwali will be celebrated with the reduced threat of COVID-19. During the past two years Diwlai celebrations remained subdued as people had to maintain social distance due to the contagious nature of the virus.
During the past one month COVID-19 cases have witnessed a decline in Jammu region and it appears that the virus has lost its sting. The vaccination process has helped the people to develop immunity and they are in a better position to fight the pandemic.
Despite no COVID-19 threat, the colours of Diwali are missing as the people seem to have been hit hard by the economic slowdown. There is no rush in the markets and shops are empty. The buzz is missing as the people seem to have been left with no money to spend.
It appears that the Diwali this year is going to be a routine affair with not much fanfare. The COVID-19 did hit the economy hard but the decisions of the administration like scrapping 149-year old Darbar Move practice and levying more taxes too have added to the woes of the people.
Prior to the outbreak of COVID-19 Jammu used to celebrate Diwali with a lot of fervor and enthusiasm. During these two years many people have lost their jobs and businesses due to the arbitrary decisions that were taken by the present dispensation. There are reports that a few businessmen are mulling to migrate from Jammu. They want to move to other states so that they can run their businesses in peace.
Prior to Diwali, people used to get their houses renovated and shopkeepers used to remain busy. But this time around they are seen waiting for the customers. People of Jammu are paying a heavy price for the decisions that have been taken by the bureaucrats in the recent past.
Instead of creating new job opportunities the bureaucrats have snatched the old jobs also. This has increased the unemployment rate and the people are feeling the pinch as they are running short of money.
The Diwali being colourless this year is an indication that Jammu people are unhappy and disappointed. Despite being nationalists and standing with the country at every step, Jammuties are facing step motherly treatment as the rulers seem more inclined towards Kashmir.
