BJP shares Mamata’s video forgets it has blocked advts to newspapers who don’t toe its line

Early Times Report

Jammu, Dec 8: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is sharing the video of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urging local newspapers to print ‘positive’ news to earn government advertisements.
Mamata had stirred a controversy while addressing a press event in Kolkata recently by stating that she will direct district magistrates (DMs) to consider the newspapers for advertisements which publish positive news of the government. She rued that TV channels only show the govt’s good work only once, but rural newspapers were writing about it in detail.
After Mamata’s statement BJP I-T chief Amit Malviya shared a video of the event to send a message how she was trying to control the Press.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, “Mamata Banerjee spoke her heart out and made it clear that the newspapers that publish positive news will get government advertisements. But the BJP without saying it has been controlling the media.”
He said, “Many nationalist newspapers in Jammu and Kashmir have not been getting advertisements for the past many months due to these highlighting issues which touch the skin of a common man. The State run Information Department has deprived these newspapers of their due share. And in J&K the government is being handled directly by the Centre, where BJP is in power.”
An observer said, “Before sharing Mamata’s video BJP should introspect and see how it has crippled the media across the country, especially in Jammu and Kashmir. Any newspaper which dares to even raise a genuine issue is cut to size. Even writing about corruption in J&K is a grave sin.”
Pertinently, Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee President Ghulam Ahmed Mir recently stated that in BJP’s Naya Jammu and Kashmir no one can speak freely. “The government led by BJP has imposed a crackdown on civilians and journalists. No one can speak freely. If this is their new model of Naya Kashmir then it’s unfortunate,” Mir said.
