Jammu, Dec 8: Tragic death of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat along with 12 other people in the chopper crash near Tamil Nadu's Coonoor on Wednesday refresh plane crash of 1963 in Poonch district.
Top commanders of the Indian Army and the Air Force were killed this day in 1963 in a helicopter crash in Poonch district of Jammu region. Lieutenant General Daulat Singh, general officer commanding in chief, western command; Air Vice Marshal E.W. Pinto, air officer commanding, western command; Lieutenant General Bikram Singh, general officer commanding, 15 Corps; Major General K.N.D. Nanavati, Military Cross, general officer commanding 25 Infantry Division; Brigadier S.R. Oberoi, Military Cross, Commander 93 Infantry Brigade and Flight Lieutenant S.S. Sodhi died in a helicopter crash November 23, 1963.
On 23 November 1963, an Aérospatiale Alouette III helicopter of the Indian Air Force crashed in Poonch district enroute to Poonch town, killing all six people on board. Six distinguished officers of the Indian Armed Forces were on board, including three general officers, an air officer, and a brigadier.
Among those killed in the crash were Lieutenant General Bikram Singh and Air Vice Marshal Erlic Pinto and the pilot Flight Lieutenant S. S. Sodhi.

Nuclear physicist Homi J Bhabha
Homi J Bhabha The crash of Air India Flight 101 near Mont Blanc in Western Europe claimed the life of Indian nuclear physicist Homi J Bhabha in 1966. It had been alleged that glitches in communication between the pilot and Geneva airport over the positioning of the aircraft near the Alps caused the mishap.
Lok Sabha Speaker GMC Balayogi
• The crash of a Bell 206 helicopter killed GMC Balayogi who was the speaker of Loksabha and a lawyer. The mishap happened at Kaikaluru in Andhra Pradesh on March 3, 2002.
Y S Rajasekhara Reddy
• YS Rajasekhara Reddy The chopper of the former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy went missing on 2 September 2009 in the Nallamala forest region. The helicopter wreckage was found on the top of Rudrakonda hills in Andhra Pradesh. Along with YSR, five others on board were also and hundreds of people in Andhra reportedly killed themselves depressed by their leader’s death.
Sanjay Gandhi
• Sanjay Gandhi died in 1980 when he was performing an acrobatic manoeuvre in an aircraft of Delhi Flying Club. He sustained severe head injuries in the crash that occurred near Safdurjung Airport in New Delhi.
Madhavrao Scindia
• Madhavrao Scindia Minister of the Union government and a Congress leader, Madhavrao Scindia died in a plane crash at Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh. All the 8 aboard Beechcraft King Air C90 died in the crash. Scindia, who was regarded as a future prime ministerial candidate, was on his way to attend a rally at Kanpur.
Mohan Kumaramangalam
• Mohan Kumaramangalam Mohan Kumaramangalam, a Congress leader and MP, died in an air crash of Indian Airlines Flight 440 in 1973. Though the bodies were beyond recognition his death was confirmed when his hearing aid and Parker pen were recovered from the body.
O P Jindal
• Eminent industrialist and Haryana’s power minister OP Jindal was killed when the chopper carrying him and the agricultural minister of the state Surendra Singh crashed in Uttar Pradesh in 2005.
Ashok Birla
• Ashok Birla Noted industrialist Ashok Birla who built his own business empire died in an air crash in 1990. The accident was reported in Bengaluru when he was flying with his wife.
