Early Times Report

Kishtwar, Dec 25: Continuous breakdown in power generation hub, Kishtwar District, has triggered resentment among the people as they are suffering due to the alleged lackadaisical attitude of the authorities.
In one such latest sequence of event, the power supply to the district was restored after 30 hours following the breakdown of a 132 KV transmission line that supplies electricity to twin districts of Kishtwar and Doda from Udhampur grid station.
As per the details available with Early Times, the power breakdown to Doda and Kishtwar District was reported at around 10 Am on Friday which was restored by 4 PM today as a result of which the anger could be clearly seen among the people and particularly among the business community and students who are the worst sufferers. “We the people of Kishtwar are suffering in the chilling winter whereas the government is earning crores from Dul Hasti through NHPC and thousands Mega Watts electricity is being generated through different power projects but in return we get nothing. Our district in real sense deserves Backward and Pahari Status. Every year we are being subjected to hardships without any support from our ex-elected representatives who are much more busy in absorption of their nears and dears in hydro projects at the cost of deserving educated unemployed youth of Kishtwar” wrote Advocate Vikas Kant Sharma.
Many people like Sharma said that the fault on 132 KV transmission has become a regular feature added that NHPC is drawing crores on the name of repairment of 132 KV transmission line every year, particularly in winters as a result of which the people are subjected to unnecessarily harassment and suffering.
“NHPC earlier decided to handover the 132 KV transmission line to state government—but due to one or other reason—same could not happen as a result of which there is no proper maintenance and watch of this transmission line since NHPC has outsourced the maintenance of transmission line through contractors” said an official wishing anonymity.
The official sources said that the existing 132 KV transmission line for Kishtwar and Doda District is around 4 decades old and added that with the passage of time the load on this transmission line increased many times during all these years.
Talking to Early Times, senior official in NHPC said that they tried their best to maintain the transmission line, but the existing load on it is beyond the capacity beside the transmission is old and need to be replaced.
The senior official however refused to divulge any further details as to why the NHPC fail to address the crisis.
Another official source told the Early Times that the double circuit 132 KV transmission line has been started around 15 years ago with an aim to provide power supply to Doda and Kishtwar District, but unfortunately even after 15 years this transmission line fail to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
“The contractor failed to complete the work and the case is in arbitration since last nearly seven years” said that official added that around half dozen tower construction is required for its completion upto Khelani Grid in Doda District.
The sources said that even if the transmission line upto Khelani grid will get completed- the load on existing transmission line will automatically get lesser with around 40 MW load of Doda District could be delinked from the existing transmission line.
Meanwhile, the people urged upon the government to look into the issue and to clear the bottlenecks in construction of double circuit transmission line so that the people of Kishtwar and Doda districts could get respite from the frequent power cuts.
