4 militants killed in South Kashmir encounters

SRINAGAR, Dec 25: Four militants were killed in two encounters with security forces in South Kashmir today. Two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were killed in a gunfight in Shopian district this morning while as two unidentified militants were killed in the Tral area in the evening.
The Shopian gunfight broke out in the Chowgam area in the early hours when a joint team of security forces launched a cordon and a search operation following an input regarding the presence of militants in the area. During the search operation, as the presence of militants got ascertained, they were given ample opportunities to surrender.
The militants instead of surrendering opened indiscriminate fire upon the joint search party and the same was retaliated leading to the encounter in which two militants were killed, a police statement said. The slain militants were identified as Sajad Ahmad Chak of Braripora, Shopian and Raja Basit Yaqoob of Achan Litter, Pulwama.
As per police records both were categorized militants linked with LeT and were part of groups involved in several terror crimes. Sajad was also instrumental in motivating & recruiting the youth to join militant fold, the statement added. It said incriminating materials and arms and ammunition including two AK series rifles, four AK magazines and 32 rounds were recovered from their possession.
In the second encounter, two unidentified militants were killed in the Hardumir Tral area. The encounter started when a joint team of forces launched a cordon and a search operation in the area. As the joint team cordoned the suspected spot, the hiding militants opened fire which was retaliated. In the ensuing encounter two militants were killed, police said.
