Early Times Report

POONCH, Jan 8: Illegal construction near S K Bridge here has created havoc due to overflowing of canal since the water entered into the houses after heavy rainfall rains thus exposing the functioning of local administration, which allowed flourishing of illegal constructions.
The residents of Mohalla Shanker Nagar near the S K Bridge suffered a lot due to heavy rainfall as water from an overflowing canal entered into their houses. They alleged that due to illegal construction of houses the passage for water flow has reduced a lot and whenever it rains heavily, it starts overflowing.
“Earlier the width of the canal was more than 22 feet but with the passage of time, it reduced to only a drain due to encroachment and now whenever it rains, it starts overflowing and water enters into the houses causing damage of property,” the residents alleged.
“Every year the water enters into our houses due to this narrow drain, which causes damage to property worth lakhs when it overflows. We have been demanding widening and deepening of drainage but nothing has been done till date. We have requested the DC, ADC and Irrigation Department to take note of this problem,” they said.
ADC Poonch said that as soon as they came to know that the water canal had diverted into houses due to heavy rains, we reached the spot immediately. “Our officials are assessing the situation and appropriate steps will be taken to avoid such a situation in future,” he said.
