Chenab Valley plunges into darkness

KISHTWAR, Jan 8: Kishtwar, Ramban and Doda Districts of Chenab valley also witnessed rain and heavy snowfall as a result of which the cold wave engulfed the whole area while majority of the areas witnessed electricity black out as well due to the ongoing snowfall— the power in many areas of municipalities across Chenab valley has been restored, but the rural areas are continuously facing the dark nights since the rain and snowfall hit the area.
As per the details available with “Early Times” Kishtwar town and its adjoining areas witnessed massive snowfall during last intervening night while areas like Bhujwah, Chatroo, Padder, Nagsni of Kishtwar District, Gandoh, Bhaderwah, Marmat, Dessa and other areas of Doda district also witnessed heavy to moderate snowfall and thus brings an end to long dry spell after the area witnessed season first snowfall last month.
Similarly major areas of Ramban district also witnessed heavy snowfall as a result of which the traffic on Jammu-Srinagar national highway was stopped by the authorities due to slippery condition of the road as well as massive landslides. The traffic on Jammu-Srinagar national highway will remain close for tomorrow as well due to slippery condition of the road as well as due accumulation of snow around Jawhar tunnel, however the authorities said that the final decision with regard to allowing any traffic will be taken after assessing the condition of the National Highway after weather conditions will improve beside subjected to the clearance of slides from Nashri to Banihal stretch of the national highway.
Official sources informed that the traffic on Kishtwar-Jammu national highway also remained suspended due to continuous rain and snowfall even though the road witness no major blockade due to snowfall and the continuous rains, but the authorities had decided to suspend the traffic of Kishtwar-Jammu national highway till weather improves added that the final decision with regard to vehicular movement on Kishtwar-Jammu and other local link roads will be allowed after accessing the road condition subjected to the snow clearance as well as slippery conditions of the roads due to freezing conditions that makes the roads vulnerable to accidents.
District Administration Kishtwar also held a detailed meeting with the officials of various departments and directed the R&B Officials to put man and machinery for snow clearance where ever required. Senior officials also directed the Power Development Department officials to take speedy remedial measures to restore the electricity in the rural areas of Kishtwar district, besides also directed the officials and the HODs of various departments not to leave the station without prior permission.
The administration took stock of essential commodities and availability of medicines and directed all the allied departments to work in coordination for effective services to be delivered to the people due to the situation aroused after snowfall. The power in many city areas of Chenab valley has been restored, but majority of the rural areas are still without electricity.
The power according to the officials of PDD department has been stopped as precautionary measure adding that 132 KV transmission line to Kishtwar is fully functional along with 33 KV grid station added that as and when weather conditions improved, the ground staff will assess the situation on account of LT/HT lines. They said that restoration work will be started on war footing bases as and when sun blazes.
