| Snowfall, rain catch admin napping | | |
The recent heavy snowfall and rains caught Jammu and Kashmir administration napping. It led to many areas witnessing power outages and plunging into darkness.
The tall claims of the administration that it was ready to face weather vagaries fell flat. People in snow bound areas had to seek Army’s help to shift patients and pregnant women to hospitals. Amidst snowfall administration couldn’t be located anywhere and in the far-flung areas people were left to fend on their own.
The weatherman had predicted heavy to very snowfall well in advance but the administration didn’t take the warning seriously and when the snowfall occurred it allowed things to take an ugly turn.
The J&K government was visible only in the cities and towns just to get publicity. It failed to reach the remotest areas where accumulation of snow led to roads getting blocked and other basic amenities vanishing.
The Border Security Force (BSF) airlifted three patients from the snow-bound Tangdhar sector in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district, while Army soldiers shifted pregnant women to hospitals in Uri and in Shopian areas. Instead of approaching the civil administration the locals sought the help of armed forces.
Heavy rains in the Jammu region led to disruption of electricity and caused water logging, puncturing the tall claims of preparedness. The recent inclement weather conditions should awaken the J&K administration. It should make the helmsmen realize that decisions that are taken in the cozy offices have to be implemented on the ground as J&K is a place where weather vagaries can wreak havoc and disrupt normal life without any intimation.
The weather has improved but many hilly areas in Jammu region are still inaccessible. The government should ensure that the residents of these areas get some respite. The need of the hour is to restore the essential services. There are many areas which are still reeling under darkness, are without water supply and are disconnected from the main land due to roads getting blocked. The government should stop projecting that everything is hunky-dory and snowfall has not affected normal life. The officials need to come out of their chambers and assess the ground situation. People who have suffered losses need to be compensated. There are many things that need to be done. Publicity only won’t help, practical steps need to be taken to diffuse the crisis. |
