ACAPULCO (MEXICO), Feb 25: Australian Open runners up and world No. 2 tennis player Daniil Medvedev of Russia guaranteed a top spot in the ATP Rankings after reaching Mexican Open semifinal.
Medvedev defeated Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinal clash on Thursday in Acapulco.
Following his quarter-final win in Acapulco, Medvedev is two wins away from starting his reign as the world number 1.
The Russian will replace Novak Djokovic, who lost 6-4, 7-6 (4) to Czech qualifier Jiri Vesely in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Championships on Thursday.
Djokovic has spent a total of 361 weeks as world number one, which is a record in the men's tennis.
'It's not easy to play a match when you get this news during the day. The first goal for me was to still win because I'm here to try to win every match I play. But it is definitely some great news," said Medvedev.
Medvedev will lock horns with Spain's Rafael Nadal in the semifinal, who defeated Tommy Paul of the USA
6-0, 7-6(5) in the quarterfinal. |
