BENGALURU, Mar 2: Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Wednesday said his government is making every effort to secure the mortal remains of Naveen SG, who was killed in a shelling in Ukraine's Kharkiv. "As far as Naveen is concerned, some of his friends have tried to send his photographs. That has to be confirmed. I will send them to the Ministry of External Affairs. My government's priority is to secure Naveen's body. All attempts are being made in this regard," he told the media here. The 21-year-old medical student from Karnataka became the first Indian casualty on Tuesday in the ongoing war in Ukraine.
He was a fourth year MBBS student at Kharkiv National Medical University. Naveen was set to be evacuated on that very day and had just stepped out of the railway station to buy food and exchange currency when a Russian rocket struck the city's historic Freedom Square killing several. Asked about the status of one of the friends reportedly injured in the shelling that killed Naveen, Bommai said the officials were trying to ascertain as there were various information available.
"There are two reports on it. One report claims that the injured person was accompanying Naveen and the other report claims that he was not with Naveen when the tragedy struck," CM stated.
Bommai mentioned about the state compensation that will be given to Naveen's family.
Replying to a query, he said the central government has vigorously taken up the process of evacuating the stranded Indian students from the war zone to safer zones.
Already two officials have been deployed at Mumbai and New Delhi to help Karnataka students arriving from Ukraine to reach their homes without any hassle, Bommai said.
A pal of gloom had engulfed Chalageri village after the news of Naveen's death reached his home.
Politicians and people thronged Shekharappa Goudar's house to pay condolences to him and his family.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bommai too, called Naveen's father on the phone and extended their condolences.
