Ring Road: Farmers upset over meager land compensation
3/3/2022 11:37:26 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Mar 3: Several property owners whose land or houses were acquired for Jammu Ring Road are in distress over inadequate compensation.
They alleged that the authorities forcibly acquired their fertile land and dismantled several houses for the Jammu Ring Road project by offering them a meager compensation as compared to the existing market price.
One of the residents of Chak Avtara near Bishnah town said that Ring Road Sangharsh Samiti has taken up the compensation issue of the affected farmers but the administration is adopting a careless attitude in dealing with it.
“Only some of the affected people whose houses were acquired for the Ring Road project got compensation. Even reassessment of their cases was not done in a proper manner by the authorities. Moreover several farmers appealed to refer their cases under Section 18 but more than four years have passed and their cases were not referred.
He further said that the work on the road was taken up in an unprofessional way. “The attitude adopted by the authorities in construction of the road was very callous. The authorities haphazardly demolished the canal and ponds in the area due to which the farmers are again at the receiving end as they would find it difficult to irrigate their fields. Link roads and crossings were destroyed to construct the road,” he said.
Another resident said that he has come on footpath as his house was demolished in order to facilitate the construction of the Ring Road.
“I am a retired government employee. After saving some money I had constructed my house. As soon as the construction got over, we moved into our new house but after some time the authorities informed us that my house has to be demolished for road construction,” he said.
“The news of demolition came like a shock to my wife who died due to a heart attack. I had spent nearly Rs 70-80 lakh for the construction of my house but received mere Rs 18 lakh as compensation out of which Rs 2 lakh was deducted as tax,” he added.
