Delay in payment of PMAY aid puts beneficiaries in a fix
3/9/2022 12:05:30 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Mar 8: Several beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in Arnia tehsil of Jammu district are awaiting payments to complete house construction which is giving anxious moments to them.
Beneficiaries who applied for the financial aid under PMAY two years ago have not received a single installment while only in few cases one to four installments have been given. “People are making rounds of the Municipal Committee office with a request to release the installment of financial aid but the officials there make only false assurances just to hoodwink the gullible beneficiaries, who are fed up with this delaying tactics,” said Suresh Kumar.
“Several beneficiaries are putting up in rented accommodations for the last two years. On an average they are spending Rs 2500 per month as rent which means they have already spent Rs 60000 while they will get only Rs 1.5 lakh from the government in the form of aid. How then they would be able to construct houses with an amount of about Rs 1 lakh,” he added.
Another beneficiary said that he received his second installment after a four-month delay, but has not been paid since then.
“If the third installment had been given when he had applied for it a few months ago, the construction of my house could have been completed by now,” he said.
“We had rented a place when our house was pulled down for reconstruction. But now I am not able to pay the rent as I have a meager source of income,” he added.
An aged woman said that we had expected that PMAY would be a big help, but the delay in payment has made the scheme more of a hassle.
“I have been waiting for the aid for the last three years but unfortunately nothing fruitful has happened so far. We urge the government to provide the aid at the earliest as it is our right,” said the old woman.
A local alleged that there are gross irregularities in the release of payments which should be looked into by the higher authorities.
“Deserving beneficiaries are being ignored and made to suffer while influential people who are not even eligible for financial assistance are getting payments on a regular basis. They are being preferred due to their clout. I appeal to the Lieutenant Governor to order a probe into the matter,” he said.
