Painting flyover pillars won’t help
3/11/2022 1:06:07 AM

The helmsmen indulging in extravagance and ostentations in Jammu and Kashmir are making a common man think that if the government can spend so much money on pomp and show and publicity then what’s stopping the administration from providing basic facilities like roads, power and water.
Former J&K Chief Minister and National Conference Vice-President Omar Abdullah recently took to social media to draw the attention of the administrators towards the prevailing traffic mess in Srinagar City. “One of the biggest problems in Srinagar city these days is traffic management. I haven’t seen any meaningful steps being taken & no new infrastructure being invested in after the Rambagh flyover was completed. Painting pretty flyover pillars won’t solve the mess on our roads,” Omar wrote on twitter.
Many roads in Jammu and Srinagar cities are in a dilapidated condition. Instead of repairing these roads the government is busy painting these thoroughfares. Huge money is being spent on these paintings. People are asking will erecting hoardings and painting roads help a common man. He needs roads without potholes so that he can reach his home safely. He needs electricity, water, proper garbage disposal mechanism, proper transportation system and other basic facilities to live his life.
The administration cannot make any city smart without providing the basic facilities to its inhabitants. The government needs to focus on what people require rather than beating trumpet about its achievements by holding gala official functions on which huge money is spent.
The government should stop painting the pillars of flyovers and bridges and should focus on making the roads safe. There are many things that can be done to prevent extravagance but it seems that the bureaucrats believe that show-off is the only way out to prove that they are performing and J&K is developing.
If one peeps into the interior areas of Jammu and Srinagar cities, he will himself come to know how smart these cities are. The dangling wires, potholed roads, broken drainage system and no proper mechanism for garbage disposal are hallmarks of Jammu and Srinagar Smart cities. Cosmetic measures aren’t enough. These are short term measures and need to be done away with. On papers Jammu and Srinagar are very Smart but in reality a lot needs to be done to develop both the cities.
