Early Times Rport

Jammu, Apr 10: While the government led by Yogi Adityanath in Uttar Pradesh has decided to extend its free ration scheme by three months, the Jammu and Kashmir administration is likely to install water meters soon by virtue of which the JK consumers will have to pay more for water usage after a restricted slab.
While the decision to give free ration in UP was taken in the first cabinet meeting chaired by Yogi Adityanath, who took oath as UP’s Chief Minister for the second time yesterday, the people of the Hindi heartland have hailed the decision. Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya said that for the scheme the government will spend ₹ 3,270 crore.
But people of Jammu and Kashmir are headed for a different ride as the government is likely to start work on installation of water meters to make “consumers pay more.”
A senior official told the Early Times on the condition of anonymity that work on installation of water meters is expected to begin in a month.
“Srinagar and Jammu cities will be covered in a first phase. The other districts will also be covered later,” he said.
Users from various categories, including the residential, commercial, industrial areas and institutional establishments will be metered.
“The installation of meters will bring an end to the misuse of drinking water and yield more revenue to the government,” the official said.
He after a certain amount of water usage the consumers will have to pay more. Till now the people would pay a yearly fee for any amount of water consumed.
A senior official in the Civil Secretariat told the Early Times on the condition of anonymity that in a “bid to hide the misadventures and misgovernance and to give a rosy picture the administration has decided to put slabs on consumption of water.”
“People of Jammu city already crave for water during summers. Metering of water connections will only fleece them. This is anti people,” he said.
The official said while Yogi government was spending more to keep people happy, the J&K administration was “doing the opposite.”
