Early Times Report

Srinagar, Apr 10: At least three linemen have died on duty in the last odd three months alone, while the Power Development Department looks unmoved by the tragedy faced by the victims, and their families who crave for relief.
The official sources said that three major tragedies have struck Kashmir while similar incidents took place in Jammu region as well.
On April 9, a casual labourer died after he fell from an electric pole in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district. The deceased identified as 30-year old Mansoor Ahmad, a Casual labour in PDD, was repairing an electric wire at Ajas village of Bandipora when he fell from the pole.
Mansoor was rushed to hospital where he was declared brought dead.
On January 10, a PDD lineman was injured after he received an electric shock at Adhal Vailoo village of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
The PDD lineman identified as Abdul Hamid Mir of Badasgam was badly wounded while repairing an electric wire of a transformer received an electric shock and thus simultaneously sustained burn injuries.
Earlier on December 24, a Power Development Department daily-wager lineman was electrocuted in Uri in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, succumbing to his injuries. Muhammad Amin, 55, son of Muhammad Azam Awan was wounded while repairing a transformer at his native village Kalgi in Uri on December 15.
Sources said the PDD was yet to decide about “relief and rehabilitation” to the families of the deceased. Some senior officials told the Early Times on the condition of anonymity that the matter of such tragedies taking place in Jammu and Kashmir were discussed with a senior official at the helm but that he said “Government has other priorities.”
The PDD officials said despite repeated reminders their superior was ignoring detailed discussion on such issues and that “compensation to such cases which traditionally includes government job for the next of the kin”, was thus awaited. “He is busy with other works and has no time to discuss such tragic issues, where the affected families need comprehensive compensation and rehabilitation package from the government.”
Despite repeated attempts the official was not available for comments.
