EARLY TIMES REPROT

JAMMU, Apr 16: Several sanitation workers in Jammu were taken into custody on Saturday. They had protested against the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) in support of their demands including regularization of services here. Officials said that sanitation workers, including women, gathered near the Press Club of Jammu under the banner of Civil Safai Karamcharis Union and tried to march towards the main road, following which the police acted.
More than 12 Safai Karamcharis, including Rinku Gill, leader of the sanitation workers, were taken in police vehicles to the nearest police station, where they were briefly detained, he said.
Gill said, “We were confident of completing the pending demands within a month after our last meeting with the government at the Civil Secretariat on February 28. The government is only making false promises but we are determined to fight for our legitimate demands."
The union has been demanding regularization of the services of workers who are between seven and 13 years old and also demanding better working environment and safety equipment.
"We are fixing a deadline of 72 hours for the fulfilment of our legitimate demands, otherwise we will intensify our struggle from Monday," Gill said.
