LEH, June 21: The COVID pandemic provided an opportunity to take yoga online which helped people to address their physical and mental health to cope up with the crisis.
Former Legislator and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vikran Randhawa during the 8th International Yoga Day celebrations held at Leh.
Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh RK Mathur, Member Parliament from Ladakh Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, officers and officials of Ladakh Administration people from all walks of life participated in the event.
Since 2015, the International Day of Yoga has been celebrated worldwide on June 21 every year, Former Legislator informed.
"The pandemic gave us an opportunity to connect with many people across the world online," said Randhawa.
He also highlighted how online yoga programmes like 'Simha Kriya and Work Beyond Stress' had helped migrant workers, employees and residents during the pandemic.
Today, around 170 national celebrated the International Yoga Day, which was introduced to them by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi.
Yoga has been very effective especially for strengthening lungs, the most vulnerable point of COVID-19 infection, Former Legislator said.
"The coronavirus attacks the respiratory system and weakens the lungs. But those practicing deep breathing or pranayama have stronger lungs and respiratory systems" Randhawa added.
"Yoga has today become an international festival. Yoga is not limited to any individual, but it is for the whole of humanity. So this year's International Yoga Day's theme is Yoga for Humanity", he said.
Until a few years ago, pictures of yoga were limited to homes and spiritual centres but today they are coming from every corner of the world, Randhawa said, adding that this shows the excitement for International Day of Yoga among people.
Randhawa also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his idea of mass demonstration of yoga on this day at 75 iconic locations across the country.
