JMC term set to end on Oct 30, ULB elections unlikely

Jammu, Oct 19: As elections for the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) have been delayed due to reasons known to those at the helm of the affairs suspense continues over the fate of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) after October 30.
The present Jammu Municipal Corporation was constituted on October 30, 2018, when newly elected corporators took oath.
As per chapter II of the Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Corporation Act 2000 under the title, Constitution of the Corporation, it is clearly mentioned that the Corporation, unless sooner dissolved under section 404 of this Act, shall constitute for five years from the date appointed for its first meeting.
The meeting of the Jammu Municipal Corporation was held on October 30, 2018, when elected corporators took oath of office at a swearing-in ceremony.
The ceremony was administered by the then Divisional Commissioner Sanjeev Verma. The 75 corporators of JMC, including 27 women, took oath in English, Dogri, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Sanskrit.
The BJP had emerged as the largest party in the JMC with 43 seats. The Independents got 18 seats and the Congress won only 14 seats.
As per the Act, an election to constitute the Corporation shall be completed before the expiry of its duration specified in sub-section and before the expiration of a period of six months from the date of its dissolution provided that the remainder of the period for which the dissolved Corporation would have constituted is less than six months, its shall not be necessary to hold any election under this section for constituting the Corporation for such period.
It is further mentioned in the Act that a Corporation constituted upon its dissolution before the expiration of its duration shall constitute only for the remainder of the period for which the dissolved Corporation would have continued under sub-section (1) had it not been so dissolved.
