Delhi poll debacle weakens Cong, forced to endure humiliation in J&K coalition
2/8/2025 10:53:29 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Feb 8: The Congress party, reeling from its humiliating third consecutive defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections, finds itself in an increasingly vulnerable position within the Jammu and Kashmir coalition government.
With another zero-seat performance in Delhi, the party has lost significant bargaining power, leaving it unable to assert its influence in the National Conference-led administration.
Despite being a coalition partner, Congress has been sidelined by the ruling National Conference (NC), which has not consulted the party on any major policy decisions since the formation of the government on October 16, 2024.
Party insiders reveal that Congress leaders in Jammu and Kashmir are demoralized, with no choice but to endure the growing indifference from their more dominant ally.
“The results in Delhi have further weakened Congress. The National Conference leadership has made it clear that they do not feel obligated to seek our opinion on governance matters,” admitted a senior Congress leader from J&K, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The latest electoral setback has only reinforced the perception that Congress is in decline, particularly in politically sensitive regions like Jammu and Kashmir.
While the party remains a formal partner in the coalition, it has struggled to assert itself in governance decisions, with the National Conference exercising complete control over administrative affairs.
Political analysts argue that Congress’ inability to win seats in Delhi for three consecutive elections has severely dented its credibility.
“In coalition politics, bargaining power comes from electoral strength. Congress’ repeated failures have reduced its ability to negotiate or influence governance, even within its alliances,” noted a political expert.
With limited political leverage, Congress leaders in J&K are now faced with a difficult reality: they must silently endure the dominance of their coalition partner or risk further political irrelevance.
Party insiders suggest that there is growing frustration within the local Congress leadership, but any open confrontation with NC could threaten the fragile coalition.
As the party grapples with its weakened position, the coming months will be crucial in determining whether Congress can rebuild its stature or remain a passive spectator in J&K’s governance under the National Conference-led administration.
