Roadmap for Daily Wagers
3/13/2025 12:04:35 AM
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announcing a committee under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo to devise a roadmap for the regularization of daily-rated wagers is a welcome step.
His announcement marks a significant development in addressing the long-standing demands of daily-rated workers in Jammu and Kashmir. The formation of a panel signals a structured approach to resolving the uncertainty surrounding these workers, many of whom have been serving for years without job security or adequate benefits.
The Chief Minister’s assurance that the policy will be finalized within six months underscores the government’s commitment to a timely resolution. His acknowledgment that this is not just a financial issue but a humanitarian and social one is crucial, as these workers contribute significantly to public services yet often struggle with economic hardships.
The Chief Minister’s move brings hope to thousands of workers who have been engaged in various government departments for years without job security, social benefits, or financial stability. For far too long, these workers have remained in a state of uncertainty, rendering essential services while living with the fear of job loss. Addressing their plight is not merely an administrative task but a moral imperative.
The Chief Minister highlighted that this is not just a financial matter but a humanitarian and social concern. This perspective is crucial, as daily wagers are among the most vulnerable sections of the workforce, often deprived of even basic employment rights.
Many of these workers have spent decades serving government institutions, yet they continue to live in economic distress due to the lack of regular wages, social security, and pension benefits. Ensuring their regularization would not only improve their livelihoods but also enhance the efficiency of government departments that rely heavily on their services.
The government must ensure that the roadmap developed by the committee is comprehensive, addressing all legal and financial concerns while upholding the rights and dignity of workers. Additionally, the J&K administration should engage with labor unions and representatives of daily-rated workers to make the policy more inclusive and effective.
If executed well, this initiative has the potential to bring much-needed relief to thousands of families, reinforce trust in governance, and set a precedent for fair labor practices. The ball is now in the government’s court to deliver on this promise and provide these workers with the justice they rightfully deserve.
