Major Milestone
3/25/2025 11:55:18 PM
The recent statement of a minister in the legislative assembly that over three lakh ‘pucca’ houses have been constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in the past two years in Jammu and Kashmir is a significant milestone in the region’s housing sector.
As per the official data, a total of 3,04,544 houses have been completed as of March 18, 2025. This includes 2,60,124 houses in Jammu and 44,420 in Kashmir, surpassing the initially sanctioned target.
The announcement, made in response to a starred question by BJP legislator Balwant Singh Mankotia, highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring housing for all under the centrally sponsored PMAY-Gramin (PMAY-G) scheme.
The figures reflect an impressive implementation of PMAY-G in Jammu and Kashmir, a region where housing infrastructure has historically faced challenges due to geographical and socio-political complexities.
The scheme, aimed at providing permanent houses to economically weaker sections in rural areas, has been instrumental in addressing homelessness and improving living conditions in the region. With a fresh survey currently underway to identify and include all remaining eligible households, the initiative promises further progress in bridging the housing gap.
The completion of over three lakh houses is not just a numerical achievement but a transformative step toward socio-economic development. A stable and secure home is fundamental to human well-being, providing a foundation for better health, education, and economic opportunities.
In Jammu and Kashmir, where harsh winters and conflict-related displacements have often left people vulnerable, the availability of pucca houses ensures safety and dignity for thousands of families.
The success of PMAY-G in the region can be attributed to a well-structured implementation framework.
The government’s direct financial assistance to beneficiaries, coupled with a streamlined digital monitoring system, has minimized leakages and improved efficiency. Moreover, the adoption of innovative construction technologies and local materials has accelerated the pace of completion while ensuring climate-resilient housing.
Continuous monitoring and community participation are keys to the success of the housing mission in Jammu and Kashmir. The government must also explore the role of public-private partnerships in further enhancing housing infrastructure in the region.
With sustained efforts and inclusive planning, PMAY-G can serve as a model for rural housing development across the country.
The construction of over three lakh pucca houses under PMAY-G marks a major stride in improving the living standards of the people in Jammu and Kashmir.
It signifies not just the fulfillment of a government promise but also a step toward inclusive growth and development in the region.
