Jammu battles nature’s wrath: Family of 7 among 11 killed in Reasi, Ramban | | | Sanjay Pandita Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 30: Incessant rains continued to wreak havoc across Jammu province for the sixth consecutive day, leaving a trail of destruction and claiming eleven lives, including seven members of a single family, in cloudburst-triggered landslides. The tragic incidents occurred in the Mahore area of Reasi district and the Rajgarh market of Ramban district, highlighting the scale of devastation caused by relentless rainfall in the region. According to initial reports, three people were killed and two others injured when a sudden cloudburst, followed by a massive landslide, struck the Rajgarh area, about 25 kilometres from Ramban town, on Saturday morning. One of the injured later succumbed to his injuries. Deputy Commissioner Ramban, Mohammad Alyas Khan, confirmed that a cloudburst had hit Rajgarh village, resulting in the deaths of four people. He added that search operations were underway to locate others reported missing. “Soon after the incident, teams of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other rescue agencies were immediately rushed to the spot for relief and rescue operations,” he said. In a separate and equally tragic incident, at least seven members of a family, including five minors, were killed when a massive landslide struck their residential house in Badar village of Mahore area in Reasi district on Saturday. Initial reports indicate that the family’s temporary dwelling, a kutcha house, was completely buried under debris. The deceased were identified as Nazir Ahmed (38), son of Bahar Din; his wife, Wazira Begum (35); and their children—Bilal Ahmed (13), Mohammad Mustafa (11), Mohammad Adil (8), Mohammad Mubarak (6), and Mohammad Wasim (5). Police and SDRF teams rushed to the area, and rescue operations are still underway, with authorities making every effort to locate any survivors and provide immediate assistance to affected families. The continuous rainfall over the past week has triggered multiple landslides and flash floods across Jammu province, causing extensive damage to roads, houses, and infrastructure. Authorities have issued advisories warning residents of low-lying and landslide-prone areas to remain alert. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to reach isolated villages and provide food, medical aid, and temporary shelters to those affected. Local administration officials have called for additional manpower and resources to speed up relief and recovery operations. The twin tragedies in Ramban and Reasi underline the vulnerability of flood- and landslide-prone regions during heavy monsoon spells, and authorities are coordinating with disaster management teams to prevent further loss of life. |
