Jammu, Sept 10: Department of Psychology of Govt. College for Women Gandhinagar, Jammu, organizes a multifaceted Awareness Program to mark World Suicide Prevention Day 2025 in line with this year’s global theme — “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” — the event sought to break silence, encourage conversations, and promote collective responsibility for mental well-being.
The program commenced with a Yellow Ribbon Awareness Drive across the campus. Students and faculty were welcomed to wear the symbolic yellow ribbon as a mark of solidarity, remembrance, and commitment to suicide prevention. Volunteers sensitized peers about the significance of the day, stressing the need to talk openly about suicide and extend support to those in distress. Awareness posters carrying helpline numbers were displayed across the campus, reinforcing the message that support is always accessible and no one has to be alone in their struggles.
During the Awareness Seminar, the welcome note was delivered by Ms. Aneesha Kour setting the tone for the day. The seminar was hosted by Shreya Bajwa and Bhoomi Sharma. The program was graced by Prof. Dr. Geetanjali Andotra, Principal, GCW Gandhinagar, who spoke about the struggles faced by people struggling with suicidal thoughts and ideations. She also stressed on the role of students in changing the narrative, cultivating empathy and compassion, to prevent suicide. She lauded the efforts of the students and faculty members for organizing this awareness seminar.
Student speakers viz. Manvi Chanyal spoke on general awareness; Laxmi Nath and Shivani Sharma covered research insights; Aarchi Bali and Himanshi Gandotra discussed case studies; and Priyanshi Sharma shared insights on early identification of suicidal ideations and Psychological First Aid.
A TED Talk–style session provided a platform for sharing lived experiences, with stories shared by Pratha Jasrotia and Pooja Sharma, bringing authenticity and empathy into the conversation. To complement the reflective mood, a musical performance was presented by Avni Sharma, Amisha Choudhary, and Jiya Salaria, blending emotion and melody to break stigma and raise a collective voice for hope and healing.
The entire program was organized under the guidance of Dr. Ujjwal Sharma, (HOD Psychology), Prof . Vinay Lata, and , Dr. Rachna Devi.. Prof. Sunita Devi, HOD Social Work was also present at the moment, further strengthening the initiative.
The observance concluded with a note of gratitude by Ms. Ankita Choudhary, recognizing the contributions of speakers, performers, hosts, teaching & non-teaching staff and students. The event stood as a heartfelt reminder that suicide can be prevented when stigma is replaced with support, and silence with solidarity.
