Festival Bonanza | | | Ahead of Diwali the Union Cabinet announced a festival bonanza by increasing Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) by 3 per cent for about 49.19 lakh Central Government employees and 68.72 lakh pensioners. Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ashwini Vaishnaw while announcing the cabinet decision said the DA/DR increase of 3 per cent over the existing rate of 55 per cent of the basic pay/pension will compensate the price rise and will be effective retrospectively from July 1, 2025. The increase is in accordance with the accepted formula based on the recommendations of the 7th Central Pay Commission. The timing of this announcement is significant. Inflation and rising costs of essential commodities have been weighing heavily on households. In such a context, the government’s move will provide financial relief to employees and pensioners, ensuring that they can celebrate the festival season with greater ease. The retrospective effect of the decision also means that arrears will be credited, further boosting liquidity in the hands of beneficiaries during the festive period. Dearness Allowance and Dearness Relief are not merely routine adjustments; they are critical mechanisms to protect the real income of employees and pensioners from the erosive impact of inflation. With consumer prices remaining volatile due to global supply chain disruptions, fluctuations in energy costs, and domestic market dynamics, the revision becomes both timely and necessary. It underscores the government’s sensitivity to the financial wellbeing of its workforce and retirees. From a macroeconomic perspective, the increased payout will also stimulate demand in the economy. As more money reaches households, spending on goods, services, and local markets during Diwali and beyond is bound to rise. This creates a multiplier effect, energising sectors like retail, textiles, and FMCG, which rely heavily on festive consumption. In this sense, the decision serves the dual purpose of providing social security to employees and pensioners while also giving a boost to the broader economy. Festivals like Diwali are not just about lights and celebrations; they are about hope, security, and renewal. By extending this financial relief, the government has sent a message that it stands firmly with its employees and pensioners, acknowledging their contributions to the functioning of the state and the nation. The DA/DR hike may appear as a routine adjustment on paper, but for millions of families, it translates into tangible relief and festive cheer. In essence, this Diwali gift is more than just a financial increment—it is a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to ensuring dignity, security, and stability for those who serve and have served the nation. |
