LBA puts four preconditions for dialogue with Centre | | |
Jammu, October 2: The agitating groups in Ladakh on Thursday rejected the magisterial inquiry announced by the Union Territory administration into the September 24 violence in Leh that claimed four lives. They reiterated their demand for a judicial probe to be conducted by a retired Supreme Court judge.
The Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA), a powerful and influential religious body in the region, announced four preconditions for resuming dialogue with the Union Government.
Addressing media persons after a meeting of the LBA Apex Body, its president Chering Dorjay Lakrook—who is also co-chairperson of the Leh Apex Body (LAB)—said the LBA was ready to resume talks with the Centre, but only if these four demands were accepted.
He said a joint prayer meeting was held to mark the 156th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, which is also observed worldwide as the International Day of Non-Violence. “The meeting paid tribute to Gandhi’s ideals of non-violence (Ahimsa), truth (Satya), and peaceful resistance (Satyagraha),” Lakrook said.
The gathering, organised jointly by the LBA and the All Ladakh Gonpa Association, also paid homage to the four people killed in police firing on September 24 while raising demands for Ladakh’s statehood and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. “The participants prayed for the swift rebirth of the martyrs in the higher realm (Devachan) and for the recovery of those injured,” Lakrook added.
Following the prayers, the members unanimously passed a resolution placing four demands before the government:
An impartial judicial inquiry by a retired judge into the excessive use of force and indiscriminate firing by the Ladakh Police and paramilitary forces on September 24, which left four Ladakhi Buddhist youths dead and scores injured, many of them seriously, and to hold the guilty accountable.
Adequate compensation for the families of those killed and critically injured.
Immediate release of climate activist, educationist, and innovator Sonam Wangchuk from detention.
Release of all other innocent persons allegedly detained arbitrarily by the Ladakh Police after the September 24 incident, and an end to further harassment of local youths, to restore peace and normalcy in the region.
