Family gets access to meet Wangchuk in Jodhpur Jail | | |
Jammu, October 2: In a significant development, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has granted permission to the family members of jailed climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to meet him at Jodhpur Jail in Rajasthan, where he has been lodged following his arrest in the aftermath of the September 24 violence in Leh.
Confirming the development, Chering Dorjay Lakrook, co-chairperson of the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and president of the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA), said that Wangchuk’s family members have already reached New Delhi and are on their way to Jodhpur to meet him.
He described the government’s decision as a small but important step in addressing the concerns of Ladakh’s agitating groups and restoring communication with the prominent activist, whose arrest has sparked widespread protests across the Union Territory.
In addition to family access, Haji Mustafa, the legal advisor representing the agitating groups in Ladakh, has also been permitted to meet Wangchuk in jail to discuss legal strategies and assess his well-being.
Mustafa’s involvement is expected to play a key role in coordinating legal recourse and providing reassurance to the activist’s supporters, who have been demanding his immediate release.
Meanwhile, reports from Leh indicate a parallel development on the judicial front. A total of 26 persons detained in connection with the September 24 violence—an incident described as “unprecedented” by local leaders—were granted bail today.
Among them, 23 individuals were lodged in jail, while the remaining three were under custody at Leh hospital due to injuries sustained during the unrest.
The release on bail has brought some relief to the families of the detained youths, though the larger demand for a judicial inquiry into the police firing that killed four people remains unaddressed. Both the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) have reiterated that unless a probe by a retired Supreme Court judge is ordered and all charges against Sonam Wangchuk are withdrawn, they will not engage in talks with the Centre.
The developments come amid heightened political and social tensions in Ladakh, where the demand for statehood, inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, and protection of cultural and land rights continue to dominate the discourse. |
