Jammu, Feb 3: In a chilling case that has stunned residents, a newlywed woman has been arrested for allegedly murdering her husband barely two months after their wedding—ending a nine-year-long relationship in a macabre act of betrayal and deceit.
Social media is flooded with comments and post after Uttar Pradesh Police solved this sensational murder case.
The victim, 33-year-old Jitendra Kumar Yadav, was found hanging inside his rented accommodation in Bareilly’s Izzatnagar area on January 26, in what was initially believed to be a case of suicide. Neighbours were told that the young man had taken his own life, and there were no immediate signs to suggest foul play. But the truth, as investigators later discovered, was far more sinister.
A post-mortem examination shattered the suicide theory, revealing that Jitendra had died due to strangulation. What followed was the unravelling of an alleged murder plot involving his wife, Jyoti, and her family members, who are accused of staging the killing to pass it off as suicide.
According to police, Jyoti allegedly strangled her husband while her father Kalicharan, mother Chameli, and brother Deepak held him down during a violent confrontation inside the rented house located in Girja Shankar Colony. After Jitendra stopped responding, the accused family members allegedly tied a muffler around his neck and suspended the body from a window grill to create the illusion of death by hanging.
An alarm was raised soon after, and neighbours were informed that the newly married man had hanged himself. When police reached the spot, the death appeared to be a suicide, and no immediate suspicion was raised.
However, the case took a dramatic turn after Jitendra’s brother, Ajay Kumar, filed a complaint, prompting police to register a case of abetment to suicide and order a post-mortem examination. The autopsy conclusively ruled out hanging as the cause of death, confirming strangulation and forcing investigators to change the charges to murder.
Three accused—including Jyoti and her parents—have been arrested, while efforts are underway to trace and arrest the brother-in-law, Deepak, who remains absconding.
Police investigations have revealed that Jyoti and Jitendra had been in a relationship since their student days and tied the knot on November 25 last year with the consent of both families, following Hindu customs. After marriage, the couple moved into the rented house in Izzatnagar. Jitendra hailed from Bhaupora village in Etawah district and worked as a contractual employee at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), while Jyoti was employed as a contractual bus conductor with the Uttar Pradesh Road Transport Corporation.
What appeared to be a long-awaited union reportedly began to unravel within weeks due to persistent financial disputes. According to police, Jitendra had withdrawn Rs 20,000 from Jyoti’s bank account and lost the money through online gambling, triggering frequent arguments between the couple.
On January 26, an altercation over the missing money allegedly spiralled out of control. Police say Jyoti then called her parents and brother to the house, leading to the fatal confrontation.
During interrogation, investigators claim Jyoti confessed to the crime, admitting that the argument turned violent and that she acted “in a fit of rage,” with her family’s involvement. After the killing, the accused allegedly worked together to wipe out evidence and stage the scene as a suicide.
The case has sent shockwaves through the area, exposing a dark tale of love, marriage, greed, and betrayal—where a relationship spanning nearly a decade ended in a carefully staged crime scene that ultimately failed to fool the law.
Police said further investigation is underway, and efforts are on to arrest the remaining accused.
