Registration of 21,918 private vehicles not renewed, Govt loses whopping Rs 6.12 crore

EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 3: Certificate of registration in respect of 21,918 private vehicles registered with eight RTOs/ARTOs have not been renewed after the prescribed time frame due to which the government exchequer has lost a whooping Rs 6.12 crore as the Transport Department could not recover the registration fee/ tax of these vehicles. Documents in possession of the Early Times revealed that MV Act, 1988 stipulates that certificate of registration in respect of motor vehicle other than a transport vehicle shall be valid for a period of 15 years from the date of issue and shall be renewable as per the provisions of the Act. On receipt of application, renew the certificate of registration for a period of five years and intimate the fact to the original registering authority. Data analysis of VAHAN revealed that, in all, there were 4,31,459 private cars and 8,06,001 two wheelers registered with different RTOs/ARTOs. Of these, registration of 15,075 private cars and 12,672 two wheelers in eight RTOs/ARTOs were due for renewal of registration during 2013-14 to 2017-18. Ho...
