JAMMU, Sept 8: A 10-member team of Central Government officials, headed by Joint Secretary (Disaster Management) in Union Home Ministry G.V.V. Sharma is camping in Srinagar and coordinating rescue and relief operations.
A Joint Secretary of Union Health Ministry will join the central team tonight while a Joint Secretary from the Department of Expenditure (Union Ministry of Finance) and another Joint Secretary from Planning Commission will reach Srinagar tomorrow to offer help and coordination to those involved in flood relief operations.

JAMMU, Sept 8: Restoration of road and tele-communication network in the Kashmir Valley, ravaged by floods, will take three to five days.
Centre has directed free flow of transport via Manali and Leh to Srinagar, the only available surface network, a top Central Government official said here today. Home Ministry is also airlifting thousands of bottles of drinking water and blankets to Jammu and Kashmir to be distributed among the flood-affected people as there is shortage of potable water and woollens.

JAMMU, Sept 8: More than 36 villages which are located ahead of the fourth bridge and in the low lying areas of river Tawi do not have a drop of water to drink.
Early Times reporter who visited these villages was told by the locals that they neither have a drop of water to drink nor are the officials of PHE department making any serious effort to provide them some kind of temporary assistance. NEW DELHI, Sept 8: The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) chaired by the Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth continued its review of the situation in J&K arising on account of floods. The Committee was informed that nearly 20,000 persons have been rescued from various places by the Army and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
Nine fixed wing aeroplanes consisting IL-76, AN-32, C-130 and 29 helicopters have been pressed into service. In addition, 14 fixed wing aircrafts have been kept standby for carrying material required for J&K relief and recovery process. JAMMU, Sept 8: Navy commandos today joined the massive rescue operations being carried out by the Army, Air Force and NDRF in flooded parts of Kashmir Valley, rescuing around 200 stranded people on the Srinagar-Sopore Highway.
Deployed for the first time to carry out rescue efforts in the flood-hit state, Naval marine commandos have rescued people caught in flood waters at Haigaon on the Srinagar-Sopore Highway, an Army official said.
"Rescue efforts are now continuing near Pantha Chowk, Srinagar," he said.
Naval diving teams are also on standby at New Delhi, Mumbai and Vishakhapatnam for the rescue efforts. A medical team is standby at Delhi for immediate deployment.... | |

MENDHAR, Sept 8: An army Havaldar sustained severe injuries after he was trapped in a landslide at his residence at Harmutha near Gursai here this morning.
Landslides occurred in Harmutha village at about 6 am, damaging several houses. The house of HavaldarAkramHussain of 9 JAK LI was also damaged in the incident and he was caught under the debris, official sources said.
