Collapse of fourth bridge over Tawi
9/8/2014 12:39:28 AM
Syed Junaid Hashmi JAMMU, Sept 7: Whether or not state government would be able to initiate action against planners and executors, washing away of approaches as well as pillar of fourth Tawi Bridge has exposed inability of involved agencies to assess strength of the structures being constructed by them for public good. The bridge is shut for traffic within 15 months of being thrown open for traffic on May 17, 2013 after just the first flash flood that struck it hard. Had it not been the wise decision of Divisional Commissioner Shantmanu to close bridges for vehicular traffic besides restricting movement by foot, a major catastrophe would have occurred on the fourth bridge which was witnessing heavy traffic due to closure of old Tawi bridge. Administrative wisdom saved Jammu from disaster. Fourth bridge connects Bhagwati Nagar area with South Jammu and used to have heavy rush of vehicles for most part of the day. On the fateful day, hundreds of people had lined up on both the sides of the bridge to witness gushing waters in river Tawi. Such was the rush that police had to resor...

9/8/2014 12:39:05 AM
Kunal Shrivatsa JAMMU, Sept 7: One of the most striking features of the traumatic floods in the valley has been the exigency with which the Army and the teams of NDRF have responded to the situation and risked their own lives to protect the lives of the citizens. The tragic Pulwama incident in which 9 Army jawans were washed away while launching a rescue operation for the trapped locals is a testimony to the gallant and selfless service that Army, assisted by paramilitary forces, NDRF and st...

Scores of people ran out in open in panic after rumours were posted on social networking site Facebook and Whatsapp messenger about the possibility of an earthquake rocking the state last night. As the rumours spread, worried locals made frantic calls to their friends and relatives telling them to take precautionary measures. The people started coming out of their houses late night fearing a massive earthquake, a probable repeat of the 2005 earthquake, and spent night in open. "I got a call from a friend at...

Double Standards: Omar silent on leakage of agenda of his cabinet meets
** But questions timing of Rajnath’s letter on KPs, its leakage to press
9/8/2014 12:37:06 AM
Early Times Report Srinagar, Sept 7: When you expect others to be sincere with you, first of all you need to be sincere with yourself too. While questioning the timing of Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh's letter asking him to identify land for rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits in the valley, he forgot that his government too has been leaking in advance the agenda, which otherwise is supposed to be secret, of state cabinet meets to the local press. Omar felt that the Centre should not have sent the letter at a time when the state was faced with worst ever crisis on account of floods triggered by heavy rains. He said so even when Rajnath had already made it clear that the process of de...

Delimitation imperative for Jammu's empowerment
Kashmir parties' attitude
9/8/2014 12:33:13 AM
Rustam JAMMU, Sept 7: People of Jammu province have been demanding political empowerment ever since October 1947, when J&K acceded to India, but with no result. The real cause of Jammu's de-empowerment is the faulty and Valley-centric delimitation of assembly constituencies. Jammu province has land area almost two time that of the over-empowered, highly prospered and pampered and privileged Kashmir, but people of Jammu elect 37 members to the assembly and those of Kashmir 46 - 2 more than the number required to form government in J&K. Kashmir has been retuning more than 50 per cent members to the assembly since 1951 without a break, despite the fact that the people of Jammu province dema...

MV department violates its own rules 10 months on, interceptor vehicles of traffic police yet to be registered
9/7/2014 10:50:22 PM
GS Asgotra Jammu, Sept 7: It is astonishing that interceptor vehicles of Traffic Police, which have been acquired by it for effective surveillance on violators of traffic rules, are yet to be registered by the department concerned. These can be seen plying without number plates. Interestingly, enforcement agency of Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) has violated its own norms as six interceptor vehicles of Traffic Police have been plying on roads with no registered number plates for the last 10 months. Pertinently, in December 2013, the traffic department purchased six Innova vehicles to check who are violating the traffic norms but these have been running in the cities and on National Hig...
