BSNL Customer Care calling subscribers for fraudulent lotteries
12/11/2013 10:51:02 PM
ET Report
JAMMU, Dec 11: Fictitious calls for lotteries are common these days, but getting a call from BSNL customer care number for lotteries has shocked the cellphone subscribers across Jammu.
Kamini Sambyal, a resident of Jammu city was astounded to receive a call from the customer care number (9419024365) of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) last evening, which informed her that she had won Rs. 10 Lakh in BSNL lotteries.
"A person namely Raj Kumar told Kamini that he was calling from BSNL and I had won BSNL lottery of Rs. 10 Lakh. He later asked me about the bank details, but I asked him to call my husband for Bank details," said Kamini.
"I got so excited to receive a call from BSNL, because it being a public sector company, I had little reason to doubt the genuineness of the call," she added.
He (Raj Kumar) later called her husband, Deepak Sharma, who asked her to send him a mail on his email.
"When he said that my wife had won Rs. 10 Lakh, I felt suspicious and asked him to send me a mail," said Deepak Sharma.
"We all know that these kind of fraudulent calls have become daily routine, so no one takes them seriously, but when it comes from BSNL customer care number, people may take that call seriously," he added.
Deepak further said that he will write to the 'Telecom Regulatory Authority of India' (TRAI) about the incident and request them to conduct an enquiry, whether the database of the BSNL and other companies is correct and how the customer care can call a subscriber for fraudulent lotteries.
A senior officer of the BSNL Jammu and Kashmir, when contacted said, "We are not aware of this kind of call, BSNL do not call anyone for any kind of lottery, someone might have hijacked our customer care number to cheat our customer."
"The customer should lodge an FIR against this call, as it is a matter of cyber crime. We will also issue advisory SMSs to our customer to aware them about this kind of fraud calls and check with our technical team that how the call has been made from this number," he added.
