CRPF Road Opening Party comes under militant attack, ASI killed
Militants manage to flee, searches launched to track them

SRINAGAR, Dec 11: Militants yet again appeared on the bye-pass in the outskirts of Srinagar city and targeted a Road Opening Party (ROP) of Central Reserve Police Force (CPRF) in the Pohru area leading to the death of an Assistant Sub Inspector of the Force. One CRPF jawan was also injured in the militant attack.
Reports said that at around 4 PM militants appeared in the Pohru Chowk area and targeted the ROP of CRPF in the area. The initial burst from militants took the CRPF personnel by surprise and by the time they could react the militants managed to flee. The gun shots rattled the area and people could be seen running for their safety.
"A road opening party of 29 Battalion CRPF (B Coy) was passing through Pohru Chowk, Nowgam when two masked militants carrying automatic rifles appeared from a lane and fired indiscriminately at them. In the initial burst of gunfire by militants, two CRPF personnel including an ASI suffered injuries," eye-witnesses told Early Times.
The ASI who suffered critical injuries in the militant attack was rushed to the 92 Base Hospital at the Badami Bagh where the doctors pronounced him as brought dead. The injured CRPF trooper identified as Constable Surinder Kumar Roy is being treated for bullet injury in thigh. His condition is stated to be stable.
The slain ASI has been identified as Udit Narayan, resident of North India's Uttar Pradesh state. It is learnt that the ASI received around one dozen bullets in his chest and that turned out to be fatal for him. The militants managed to flee from the area after carrying out the attack and they are yet to be tracked down.
Sources in CRPF said that the attack was carried out by a solitary militant and not by two militants. They said the militant was boarding a Tata Indica Car and after alighting from the vehicle he fired upon the Road Opening Party of CRPF leading to death of CRPF ASI and injuries to a jawan.
"The militant fired bullets towards the CRPF personnel and the same was retaliated by the forces personnel. However, the militant managed to flee even though a manhunt has been launched to track him. The ASI who got killed received many bullets in his chest and he was declared brought dead at the hospital," said CRPF sources.
Panic gripped Pohru and its neighboring areas after the shootout. This forced the shopkeepers to run for safety, while keeping open their shops and commercial establishments. The movement of transport on the busy bye-pass was affected for some time. Police and security forces cordoned the whole area and searches have been launched to nab the militants who carried out the deadly attack.
This was the second major militant attack on the bye-pass connecting Baramulla with Srinagar and subsequently Jammu via South Kashmir. On June 24, 10 army personnel lost their lives when militants attacked their convoy which was on way to Budgam. Some minor attacks have also taken place but without casualties.
