Farooq Abdullah admits UPA is corrupt, anti-people
NC not to leave Congress in lurch

JAMMU, Dec 11: Notwithstanding the rabidly anti-Congress attitude of his brother Mustafa Kamaal towards the Congress party and his son and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's veiled attack on AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi's leadership, the NC president and Union Minister Farooq Abdullah declared the other day that "we have been with the UPA in bad times and we will continue to support them". He made this statement while reacting to the defeat of the Congress in the just-concluded Assembly elections.
One may or may not believe Farooq Abdullah when he says that the National Conference would not sever its ties with the UPA considering the track record of the party that he and son lead, but one would surely appreciate the reasons he gave for the massive defeat of the Congress party. He said corruption, scams, inflation and so on led to the defeat of the Congress party. "The Congress's colossal defeat in the recent Delhi Assembly polls is the outcome of inflation, corruption and other anti-people activities during the 15 years' rule", he said while commenting on the defeat of the Congress Government in Delhi.
At the same time, Farooq Abdllah candidly admitted that the BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi has become a very important factor and it was this factor that also contributed to the fall of the Congress. "The verdict shows that Modi's elevation has certainly helped the BJP but, at the same time, sounded alarming bells for the Congress, as Rahul Gandhi's extensive campaigning in the states has yielded no results," he said while comparing the performance of Modi with that of Gandhi, and added that the "poll defeat is a jolt to the Congress".
Farooq Abdullah is perhaps the first UPA leader who has accepted that corruption, scams and anti-people policies of the Congress-dominated and Congress-guided UPA Government have made the Union Government and the Congress party quite unpopular. It is a different story that he said that the NC would not leave the troubled Congress and the UPA. One can understand his compulsion and his compulsion is that he, like his son, cannot live without power.
