Early Times Report

Kathua, May 18: Despite having the knowledge of poor condition of hospitals across the state, JK Health Minister Lal Singh vows development in Health department, narrates his working style in public meetings and before state/ union BJP leaders but reality differs to his fictions.
Ironically, his native hospital cries for facilities and shortage of staff members including poor management in district hospital Kathua not only bring anguish for patients but also contradicts minister's fictional statements.
Any visitor to District Hospital Kathua can notice its worse condition. Vehicles are being parked without particular parking place ,despite having hoarding for AIDS awareness- no such awareness centre is established, unhygienic mess, leakage of drinking water pipes convert roofs into ponds, unused water tanks are in dilapidated position, unused solar system & lift etc bring suffering for patients who approach to get health care from diseases.
Shortage of staff members including doctors, paramedical staff, technicians of CT scan, blood bank, ultrasound sections, laboratories add sufferings of patients. Few posts of doctors are lying vacant, some doctors have still not joined their duties after transfer to hospital and few doctors are on leave. Anyone one can imagine the condition of hospital that runs without appropriate staff members & facilities.
Girdhari Lal, 79 years old hailing from Kathera village has been approaching hospital for last five days for treatment as an injection got reacted but nobody cared for the old patient. When he approached doctor, the latter made makes excuses and said concerned doctor is not available in the hospital for few days. It is difficult for him to pay frequent visit in hospital.
Chouhan, a youth said he submitted affidavit after delivery of his wife to get financial assistance under Jacha-Bacha Scheme but he has received nothing except assurance for last few months.
He said the work is not done up to the mark in district hospital but health minister vows development, ironically reality differs at ground level.
Surinder Bajaj, a social worker alleged the minister ignored the suffering of people and added that elder person and patients could not climb stairs to reach third and fourth floors.
He said lift that was set up for comfort of the patients and elder visitors is yet to start in 6 years time. He said doctors don't prescribe medicines which are available in government medical stores and make huge commission from medical companies by prescribing costly medicines. He said government should take serious steps in this regard and appropriate facilities must be providing in the hospital.
Dr Sunil Sharma, Deputy Medical Supdtt. (Superintendent was not available during office hours in hospital) said hospital covers whole district so shortage of staff members obviously brings sufferings for patients. He accepted that few doctors are not still joining their posts after few weeks of transfer in the hospital. He said there is need to reform the system as few diagnosis equipments are not in working position due to lack of proper funding. Dr Sunil said children and labor room had been shifted in 4th floor when hospital started functioning that should be shifted in ground floor. He ensured to discuss all matters to concerned officers and remedial measures would be found in days to come. It is pertinent to mention here that prominent people of district Kathua frequently raise their voice for smooth functioning of district Hospital Kathua but their voice is always pressed down.
Doctors hailing from Jammu don't join their duties as they consult patients in private clinics in Jammu then how can they serve in small town Kathua.
Outspoken Health Minister must reform his home town before citing examples of his behavior to medical officers and vowing development in health sector.
